Scientific Overview
Immunization schedules are essential to shield commercial poultry from highly contagious pathogens (Newcastle Disease, Gumboro, Infectious Bronchitis). Vaccine delivery must be carefully calculated to ensure all birds receive an active immunizing dose.
Avian Mucosal & Systemic Immunity
Live vaccines (e.g., Newcastle B1/LaSota) colonize the mucosal cells of the trachea and conjunctiva, triggering local IgA antibodies. This provides local protection before systemic IgG titers are established in the bloodstream. Inactivated vaccines (oil-emulsion, injection-only) provide long-term, high titers of systemic neutralizing antibodies.
Drinker Dilution Mathematics
Live viral vaccines are highly sensitive to sanitizers (chlorine) in drinking water. Water must be stabilized using Skimmed Milk Powder (SMP) at a rate of 2.0 to 2.5 grams per liter before adding the vaccine. This buffers chlorine ions and protects the live virus from inactivation.
This ensures the vaccine solution is entirely consumed within a 1.5 to 2.0 hour window, preventing viral decay in open drinker lines.
