Avian Anatomy & Physiology Terminology

  • Crop (Ingluvies): A muscular pouch located at the base of the chicken's neck that serves as a temporary storage compartment for ingested feed. Food is moistened and softened here before entering the glandular stomach.
  • Proventriculus: The glandular stomach of the bird, which secretes hydrochloric acid (HCl) and pepsinogen to initiate chemical digestion before food enters the mechanical stomach.
  • Gizzard (Ventriculus): The thick-walled, muscular grinding organ that mechanically crushes and grinds grain. Birds consume grit (small stones) that resides in the gizzard to assist in this mechanical mastication.
  • Medullary Bone: A highly labile, calcium-rich bone type found in the marrow cavity of female laying hens. It serves as a calcium reserve that is rapidly mobilized during the eggshell calcification process.
  • Synsacrum: A rigid skeletal structure in birds formed by the fusion of the thoracic, lumbar, sacral, and caudal vertebrae, providing structural stability required for bipedal walking and flight.
  • Air Sacs: Nine thin-walled membrane sacs that act as bellows to pump air through the rigid, non-expandable avian lungs. This configuration guarantees a continuous, one-way flow of oxygenated air during both inhalation and exhalation.
  • Thermoregulation: The metabolic process by which chickens maintain their core body temperature (~41.5°C). Lacking sweat glands, chickens rely on evaporative cooling through panting (gular flutter) and convective wind-chill.

Flock Management & Ventilation Engineering

  • Stocking Density: The total body weight or number of birds housed per square meter of floor space. Managing stocking density is critical for welfare, feed access, and heat dissipation.
  • Feed Conversion Ratio (FCR): A key measure of production efficiency calculated as the kilograms of feed consumed divided by the kilograms of live body weight gained. A lower FCR indicates superior feed utilization.
  • European Poultry Efficiency Factor (EPEF): A standardized formula combining livability (%), average body weight (kg), age at slaughter, and FCR to evaluate the overall economic efficiency of a broiler flock.
  • Tunnel Ventilation: A high-velocity ventilation setup where exhaust fans pull air down the length of the house at speeds of 2.5–3.5 m/s, creating a convective wind-chill cooling effect.
  • Static Pressure: The difference in air pressure between the inside and outside of a ventilation-controlled poultry house, measured in Pascals or inches of water column.
  • Brooding: The initial phase of a chick's life (day 1-14) where artificial heat is supplied to compensate for their lack of thermoregulation.

Avian Pathology & Biosecurity Protocols

  • Necropsy: A post-mortem veterinary examination of a bird's carcass to diagnose the cause of death.
  • Pathognomonic: A clinical sign or post-mortem lesion that is specifically characteristic of a single disease (e.g. Bollinger bodies in Fowl Pox, or strawberry bursa in Gumboro).
  • Airsacculitis: Inflammation of the air sacs, characterized by cloudiness, thickening, and accumulation of caseous (cheesy) exudate, typically caused by Mycoplasma or E. coli.
  • Biosecurity: The system of practices and physical barriers designed to prevent the introduction (exclusion) and spread (containment) of infectious pathogens.
  • Fomites: Inanimate objects (boots, crates, tires) capable of mechanically carrying infectious pathogens from one location to another.

Feed Chemistry & Poultry Nutrition

  • Least-Cost Formulation: An optimization method using linear programming or heuristic algorithms to mix ingredients to meet exact nutritional requirements at the absolute lowest cost.
  • Metabolizable Energy (ME): The fraction of feed gross energy available for growth, egg production, and basal metabolic maintenance, excluding fecal and urinary energy losses.
  • Digestible Amino Acids: The portion of dietary amino acids that are absorbed by the gut, rather than just total protein content, optimizing gut health and nitrogen emissions.
  • Coccidiostats: Chemical or ionophore compounds added to starter feeds to inhibit the reproduction of Eimeria protozoan parasites.
  • Mycotoxins: Toxic secondary metabolites produced by molds (like Aspergillus or Fusarium) on stored grains, causing immune suppression, liver damage, and poor performance.
