Scientific Overview

Poultry manure is a highly concentrated organic fertilizer rich in plant nutrients. However, improper composting, storage, and over-application carry chemical crop burning and environmental pathogen hazards.

Poultry Manure Nutrient Content (NPK)

This high density is due to chickens excreting both feces and urine (in the form of uric acid) through a single opening, the cloaca. Rations formulated using our Feed Formulation Mixer directly influence the fecal nutrient output, particularly nitrogen and phosphorus concentrations.

Soil Chemistry & Organic Fertilizer Value

Upon soil application, soil microbes convert organic uric acid into ammonium (NH4+) and subsequently nitrate (NO3-), which plants absorb. This biological decomposition provides both rapid-release and slow-release nitrogen, making poultry manure an exceptional organic soil builder that improves soil structure, water holding capacity, and microbial flora.

Disadvantages of Raw Poultry Manure

Despite its benefits, there are several agronomic and environmental disadvantages of poultry manure when applied raw:

  • Ammonia Volatilization: Raw manure releases high levels of ammonia gas, which can burn plant leaves and roots, causing crop damage.
  • Pathogen Transmission: Raw chicken waste carries zoonotic bacteria, including Salmonella enterica and Escherichia coli, which can contaminate vegetables and crops.
  • Eutrophication Risks: Heavy rainfall on surface-applied manure washes phosphorus and nitrogen into local waterways, causing algal blooms and ecological oxygen depletion.
  • Weed Seed & Odor: Uncomposted manure carries offensive odors and can spread viable weed seeds in agricultural fields.
