Biosecurity in Poultry Farming: Complete Guide & Checklist

Biosecurity in poultry farming is the system of management practices and physical barriers designed to prevent the introduction (exclusion) and spread (containment) of infectious diseases within and between poultry flocks. Effective biosecurity is the single most cost-effective investment in commercial poultry health management — preventing disease is always cheaper than treating it.

Biosecurity Definition and Zones

Commercial biosecurity operates across three physical zones:

  • Outer Perimeter (Green Zone): Public road boundary. Vehicle disinfection arch or wheel bath required before entry.
  • Farm Zone (Yellow Zone): Farm roads, feed storage, equipment storage. Restricted to farm staff only. Visitors must change footwear and clothing.
  • Clean Zone (Red Zone): Inside the poultry house. Strictly no unauthorized entry. Full protective clothing (disposable coverall, boot covers, gloves, and hairnet) required at all times.

Key Biosecurity Measures: The Practical Checklist

  • Perimeter fence: Complete fence enclosing all farm buildings with a single controlled entry gate
  • Footbaths: Active disinfectant footbaths at every house entry. Disinfectant changed every 1–2 days (chlorine, quaternary ammonium, or organic acid based)
  • Visitor control: Signed visitor log. Mandatory 48–72 hour off-farm period before visiting another poultry operation
  • Vehicle disinfection: Feed trucks, catch crews, and service vehicles disinfected before entering the farm yard
  • All-in, all-out management: Never mix birds of different ages or sources in the same house
  • Downtime between flocks: Minimum 14 days empty house (clean, disinfect, dry, and rest)
  • Rodent control: Active bait stations every 10–15 m around perimeter. Rodents are major vectors of Salmonella and Newcastle disease
  • Wild bird exclusion: Repair all roof and wall gaps >5mm. Install bird netting on ventilation inlets
  • Litter management: Monitor moisture daily. Wet spots indicate drinker leaks or ventilation failure and harbor Eimeria oocysts
