Egg Drop Syndrome 76 (EDS '76): Symptoms & Eggshell Pathology

Scientific Overview

Egg Drop Syndrome 1976 (EDS '76) is an economically devastating viral disease of laying hens and breeder flocks caused by Duck Atadenovirus A. The virus targets the epithelial cells of the shell gland (uterus), causing a sudden failure to achieve peak egg production or a severe drop in lay rate by 10% to 40%, accompanied by the production of pale, thin-shelled, soft-shelled, or shell-less eggs.

Ducks and geese are natural reservoir hosts for EDS virus, carrying it asymptomatically. Transmission to chickens occurs vertically via infected embryonated eggs or horizontally through water supplies contaminated by waterfowl droppings.

Eggshell Pathology: Shell-Less, Soft & Pale Eggs

The pathognomonic sign of EDS '76 is sudden loss of eggshell quality in otherwise healthy-looking hens:

  • Loss of Shell Pigment: Brown-egg layer strains lay chalky, white, or pale-pigmented eggs.
  • Thin & Soft Shells: High incidence of thin-shelled, soft-shelled, and completely shell-less eggs (membrane eggs).
  • Rough / Sandy Shell Surface: Calcareous deposits and rough texture at the apex of the eggshell.
  • Internal Quality: Albumen is watery and thin, but yolk quality remains unaffected.

Oviduct Lesions & Differential Diagnosis

Gross post-mortem lesions are limited strictly to the reproductive tract: severe atrophy of the shell gland (uterus), mucosal edema, and white exudate in the uterine cavity. Ovaries remain active, producing normal yolks that pass through the oviduct without proper shell deposition.

Differential Diagnosis: Differentiate EDS '76 from Infectious Bronchitis (IBV, which causes misshapen eggs with tracheal rales) and Newcastle Disease (NDV, which causes systemic signs, nervous paralysis, and proventricular hemorrhages).

Prophylaxis & Immunization Schedules

Control relies on biosecurity and oil-emulsion vaccination:
