Scientific Overview
Commercial incubation mimics hen nesting behavior by regulating heat, moisture, ventilation, and egg turning. This Guide maps setter parameters and incubation milestones required to produce high-quality day-old chicks.
Incubation Settings (Days 1 to 18)
Maintain setter temperature at 37.5°C to 37.8°C (99.5°F - 100.0°F) and relative humidity at 50-60%. Eggs must be turned 45 degrees hourly to prevent the developing embryo from adhering to the inner shell membrane. Turn off turning mechanisms and transfer eggs to the hatcher on Day 18.
Hatcher Settings (Days 18 to 21)
Drop temperatures to 36.8°C to 37.2°C (98.2°F - 99.0°F) to prevent chick heat exhaustion as they begin self-heating and pip shells. Raise relative humidity to 65-75% to soften eggshell membranes, helping chicks exit the shell.
Egg Storage & Physiological Pre-Warming
Hatching eggs are rarely set immediately. They are held in egg holding rooms at 15°C to 18°C (59°F - 64°F) and 75% relative humidity to suspend embryonic development. If stored for more than 7 days, drop temperature to 12°C and turn eggs daily to maintain hatchability.
Pre-Warming: Before setting, eggs must be pre-warmed at 24°C (75°F) for 8 to 12 hours. Setting cold eggs directly into a hot setter causes condensation ('sweating') on the eggshell, which allows bacteria to enter the shell pores, leading to high embryonic mortality and exploders.
