Poultry Litter Management & Moisture Control Guide

Proper litter management is the foundation of poultry house air quality, footpad health, and broiler growth performance. Maintaining ideal litter moisture levels (20% to 25%) prevents caking, reduces ammonia (NH3) gas release, and eliminates the root cause of footpad dermatitis and breast blisters.

Bedding Material Selection: Shavings vs Rice Hulls vs Straw

Popular poultry bedding substrate benchmarks:

  • Pine Wood Shavings: High moisture absorption capacity, low dust, ideal for brooding. Avoid hardwood shavings containing toxic tannins.
  • Rice Hulls: Excellent moisture release and low caking tendency, though slightly lower initial absorbency than pine shavings.
  • Chopped Straw: Cheap but prone to rapid caking and mold growth (Aspergillus) if chopped over 2.5 cm long.

Litter Moisture & Ammonia Dynamics

When litter moisture exceeds 30%, microbial breakdown of uric acid into ammonia gas accelerates exponentially. High ammonia (>20 ppm) causes tracheal cilia paralysis, eye ulceration, and reduced feed consumption.

Chemical Litter Acidifiers (PLT, Sodium Bisulfate)

Applying chemical acidifiers (such as Sodium Bisulfate / PLT) to reused or damp litter before chick placement lowers litter pH below 4.0, inhibiting ammonia-producing bacteria during the critical early brooding weeks.
