Biosecurity is the primary defense line against devastating avian pathogens like Avian Influenza, Newcastle Disease, and Salmonella. A robust biosecurity program consists of conceptual layout design, structural barriers (e.g. perimeter fences, concrete aprons), and operational protocols (e.g. footbaths, vehicle disinfection, shower policies). The Three-Zone Isolation System

To prevent the entry of pathogens, commercial farms should enforce a strict three-zone classification:

  • Dirty Zone (Unrestricted): Exterior public roads, parking lots, and visitor log areas. Pathogen presence is assumed.
  • Buffer Zone (Transition): Inner farm driveways, feed silos, and equipment sheds. Access requires vehicle wheel disinfection and footwear changes.
  • Clean Zone (Restricted): Interior of the poultry houses. Access is restricted to house-specific clothing and boots, following hand sanitization and footbaths.

Operational Disinfection Standards

Chemical disinfection protocols are only effective when organic matter (dust, litter, feces) is physically scrubbed away first:

  • Footbaths: Use broad-spectrum disinfectants like Glutaraldehyde, Virkon-S (1% concentration), or Phenolics. Change fluid every 48 hours or when organic loading occurs.
  • Down-Time: Enforce a minimum of 14 days of empty house down-time between flock placement to break pathogen life cycles.
  • Sanitation Sequence: Dry clean (litter removal) -> Wet wash (detergent spray) -> Rinse -> Chemical disinfect -> Fumigate.
