Poultry House Design: Construction, Layout & Ventilation Guide
A scientific manual for designing, constructing, and optimizing commercial poultry houses for broilers and layers.
Scientific Overview
A well-designed poultry house is the foundation of commercial production success. The building structure, insulation, ventilation system, and interior layout directly determine flock health, environmental control efficiency, and profitability. This guide covers the essential engineering parameters for designing a modern broiler or layer house.
Poultry House Dimensions and Orientation
Standard commercial broiler house dimensions and design specifications:
- Width: 12–16 m for naturally ventilated houses. Tunnel-ventilated houses are commonly 12–15 m wide (for uniform air velocity distribution).
- Length: 80–150 m. Longer houses allow higher bird capacity and better amortization of fixed costs per bird.
- Height (eave): 2.4–3.0 m to allow sufficient air volume and prevent CO2 stratification at litter level.
- Orientation: Orient the long axis East–West to minimize solar heat gain through the sidewalls, and position the large cooling pad end facing the prevailing wind direction.
- Spacing: Minimum 40–60 m between houses to prevent cross-contamination of exhaust air and maintain biosecurity buffer zones.
Insulation Standards and Wall Construction
Proper insulation is critical for energy efficiency and temperature control. Target R-values (insulation resistance):
- Ceiling/Roof: R-19 to R-26 (6–8 inches of fiberglass or polyurethane spray foam)
- Sidewalls: R-11 to R-19
- Concrete floor: Perimeter edge insulation to prevent winter heat conduction to soil
Vapor barriers (plastic sheeting) must be installed on the warm side of all insulation to prevent condensation inside wall cavities, which causes mold growth and pathogen harboring.
Ventilation System Design
The ventilation system is the most critical mechanical component of any poultry house:
- Minimum Ventilation: Timer-controlled fans running on cycles (e.g., 60 seconds on per 5-minute cycle) to remove metabolic moisture and CO2 during cold weather. Calculate required fan capacity with the Ventilation Fan CFM Calculator.
- Tunnel Ventilation: Large-capacity exhaust fans pull air at 2.0–3.0 m/s through the house length during hot weather for wind-chill cooling.
- Evaporative Cooling Pads: Installed at the inlet end. As warm air passes through water-saturated pads, it drops 5–10°C by evaporative cooling.
- Controller Automation: Modern houses use computerized temperature/humidity/CO2 controllers to stage fans progressively as heat load increases.
Poultry House Capacity Calculation
Stocking density determines bird welfare, ventilation load, and litter quality:
- Broilers (intensive): 10–17 birds/m² (depending on market weight and season)
- Layer hens (aviary): max 9 hens/m² usable floor space
- Enriched cages: minimum 750 cm² per hen (EU directive)
Use the Housing Capacity Calculator to determine optimal bird numbers for your house dimensions and target market weight.
