1. Avian Immunological Mechanics: Maternal Antibodies vs Active Immunity

Chicks hatch with high circulating titers of Maternally Derived Antibodies (MDAs) absorbed from the egg yolk sac. While MDAs protect chicks during their first 7 to 10 days of life, high circulating maternal antibody titers can neutralize live field vaccines if administered too early.

Drinking Water Vaccination Rules:

When administering live vaccines through drinker lines, turn off water chlorinators and ozone generators 48 hours prior. Add Skimmed Milk Powder (SMP) at 2.0 to 2.5 g per liter of water (or a specialized effervescent blue dye stabilizer) to neutralize residual sanitizer halogens and protect the live viral envelope. Vaccine Administration: Critical Rules

Incorrect vaccine administration destroys vaccine efficacy. Follow these rules:

  • Cold chain: Store live vaccines at 2–8°C. Never expose to direct sunlight or freeze (except freeze-dried vials). Reconstitute with cold distilled water only.
  • Water vaccination: Withhold water for 1.5–2 hours before vaccination (thirsty birds drink faster). Add Skimmed Milk Powder (2.5 g/L) to neutralize chlorine in the water before adding vaccine.
