When starting a poultry farm, choosing the correct accessories depends directly on the types of poultry farming systems you choose. Intensive rearing systems require high levels of automation to maximize performance and FCR.
Drinker Systems: Nipple vs Bell Drinkers
Nipple drinker lines are the sanitary standard, preventing open water contamination. Maintain line pressure between 20-30 cm of water column, and adjust height so birds reach at a 45-degree angle. Flow rates should be monitored: 60-80 ml/min for mature broilers. Bell drinkers are cheaper but require daily sanitization to prevent bacterial biofilm build-up and wet litter spots. Feeder Setup and FCR Wastage Controls
Pan feeders must feature anti-rake grills and adjustable inner feed cone depth. Set feed levels to 1/3 of the pan depth to minimize bill-out wastage (feed kicked onto litter). Feeders should be raised dynamically as birds grow so the pan lip is level with the bird's breast bone, maximizing FCR efficiency and reducing leg disorders. Lighting Design: Lux & Photoperiod Automation
Light intensity should start at 20-40 Lux during Day 1-7 brooding to encourage feed and water discovery. By Day 8, drop intensity to 5-10 Lux to reduce social stress and feather pecking. Automated photoperiod timers must supply 18 hours light at start, step-down to 16 hours light and a minimum of 4-6 hours continuous dark, allowing natural melatonin release for immune and bone development.
IoT Climate Sensors & Variable Speed Ventilation
Modern automated poultry houses incorporate variable speed exhaust fans linked to electronic thermostats. Automated ammonia (NH3) gas sensors trigger fan overrides if levels exceed 15 ppm, and carbon dioxide (CO2) sensors trigger overrides if levels exceed 3000 ppm, preventing airsacculitis and ascites outbreaks in winter.
