Alternative Raw Materials: Volatile corn and soy prices require the use of local agricultural byproducts:
• Palm Kernel Cake (PKC): Abundantly available byproduct of palm oil mills. High in fiber (15-18%) and low in lysine. PKC can be included up to 10% to 12% in broiler finisher diets and up to 15% in layer feeds, provided it is supplemented with commercial beta-mannanase enzymes to break down cell wall mannans.
• Cassava Root Meal: Can replace corn up to 20% of the diet. However, cassava must be peeled, washed, and toasted/fermented to reduce toxic hydrocyanic acid (HCN) levels below 10 ppm.
• Brewers Dried Grains (BDG): Capped at 5% to 8% due to its high fiber and bulk density.
3. Endemic Pathogen Pressure & Vaccination Schedules
Tropical Vaccine Protocols: Flocks in West Africa face high challenges from velogenic Newcastle Disease and Gumboro:
• Newcastle Disease (ND): Intraocular live vaccine (ND Intraocular / Clone 30) at Day 1, followed by ND LaSota booster at Day 21 via drinking water. In layers, an oil-inactivated ND+IB vaccine is administered at 16 weeks before point-of-lay.
• Infectious Bursal Disease (IBD / Gumboro): Hot-vaccination schedules require intermediate-plus Gumboro strains administered at Day 10-12 and repeated at Day 21 via clean drinking water.
