Commercial poultry in Pakistan is a key livestock sector, contributing over 40% of total meat supply. Key operational priorities include combating summer heatwaves in Punjab and Sindh and balancing feed costs with domestic crop processing byproducts.

1. Climatic & Housing Engineering Guidelines

Summer Heat Stress Mitigation: Ambient temperatures during the summer (April to September) in Punjab (Faisalabad, Multan) and Sindh (Sukkur, Hyderabad) regularly exceed 45°C. Open-sided houses are highly vulnerable; thus, commercial operators utilize closed Environmentally Controlled (EC) tunnel houses. Sizing criteria:

Evaporative Cooling Pads: Must design pad area for a target face velocity of 1.5–1.8 m/s. Evaporative cooling drops house inlet temperature by 6°C to 10°C, depending on relative humidity.

Tunnel Fan Capacity: Maintain a minimum wind-chill airspeed of 2.5–3.0 m/s at the bird level. Sizing formula requires:

Total Fan Capacity (m³/h) = Cross-Sectional Area (m²) × Design Air Speed (3.0 m/s) × 3600

Heat Stress Physiology: In extremely high heat, birds pant to lose heat via evaporative cooling, which expels carbon dioxide and leads to respiratory alkalosis (raised blood pH). To counter this, add water-soluble Vitamin C (200 mg/kg) and ammonium chloride or potassium chloride electrolytes to the drinking lines.

2. Feed Formulation & Local Raw Material Ceilings

Protein & Energy Substitution: Maize (corn) remains the primary energy grain. However, imported soybean meal costs are volatile, forcing feed mills to incorporate domestic alternatives:

Canola Meal: Excellent amino acid profile. Used up to 10% in broiler finisher and layer rations. Supplementation with commercial enzymes is recommended to counteract dietary fiber.

Rapeseed Meal: Abundantly produced locally but contains anti-nutritive factors (glucosinolates and erucic acid). Inclusion must be strictly capped at 5% to 7% in broiler feeds to prevent thyroid hypertrophy and reduced growth rates.

Rice Polishing: A byproduct of local rice milling mills, rich in fat (12-14%). Rice polishing can substitute for maize up to 15% to 20% in diets. However, it is prone to rapid rancidity due to hydrolytic and oxidative lipase enzyme activity; storage should not exceed 3 weeks without antioxidants (ethoxyquin).

3. Endemic Disease Pressure & Vaccination Schedules

High-Pathogen Bio-Management: Major endemic challenges include Newcastle Disease and Fowl Adenovirus:

Newcastle Disease (Rani Khet): Highly contagious. Standard prevention involves live vaccination (ND Clone 30 or LaSota via drinking water/eye drop at Day 7 and Day 21) paired with an oil-adjuvanted inactivated ND vaccine injected subcutaneously at Day 9-10.

Hydropericardium Syndrome (HPS / Angara Disease): Caused by fowl aviadenovirus 4 (FAdV-4), triggering sudden mortality spikes with characteristic accumulation of straw-colored fluid in the pericardial sac (hydropericardium) and hepatomegaly. Broiler flocks require a mandatory formalin-inactivated HPS vaccine at Day 10 to 12.
