Celebrated for laying genuine pastel sky-blue eggs, the Ameraucana is an American standardized pure breed derived from Chilean Araucanas. Officially admitted to the American Poultry Association in 1984, the Ameraucana was specifically developed to retain the prized blue-egg genetics while eliminating the lethal ear-tuft gene (which caused high embryonic mortality in pure Araucanas). With their full facial muffs, fluffy beard, small pea comb, and slate-blue shanks, Ameraucanas are cold-hardy, docile, and beautiful.

Ameraucana vs. Easter Egger: The Critical Genetic Difference

Key Taxonomic Difference: A true Ameraucana is an APA-standardized purebred chicken with slate-colored legs, pea comb, full beard and muffs, tailed rumps, and homozygous blue-egg genetics (O/O). An Easter Egger is an unregulated crossbred hybrid (often carrying heterozygous green or olive egg genes and yellow or green legs).

Many commercial hatcheries mislabel Easter Eggers as 'Americana' or 'Ameraucana'. While Easter Eggers are fantastic backyard layers, true Ameraucanas breed 100% true to standard in eight recognized color varieties (Black, Blue, Wheaten, Blue Wheaten, Buff, Silver, Brown Red, and White) and will always lay pastel blue eggs.

The small pea comb (three low parallel ridges) and heavy facial feathering protect the face, comb, and wattles from winter winds, preventing frostbite in sub-zero climates.
