Scientific Overview
Avian Colibacillosis is the most prevalent bacterial disease in commercial poultry worldwide, caused by Avian Pathogenic Escherichia coli (APEC). APEC induces localized or systemic infections including airsacculitis, pericarditis, perihepatitis, cellulitis, omphalitis (yolk sac infection), and fatal colisepticemia.
Pathogen Features & Virulence Genes (iroN, iutA, CoIV)
Avian Pathogenic Escherichia coli (APEC) is defined as a specialized extraintestinal pathogenic Escherichia coli (ExPEC) strain harboring specific virulence plasmids (such as the CoIV plasmid) encoding iron acquisition systems (iroN, iutA, iucD), serum resistance, and fimbrial adhesins (F1, P fimbriae).
Recent genomic sequencing confirms that APEC isolates frequently act as primary systemic pathogens rather than mere secondary opportunistic invaders (ABBA et al., 2025; Wang et al., 2025; Khairullah et al., 2024).
Gross Pathological Lesions: The Colibacillosis Triad
Pathognomonic necropsy triad in colisepticemic broilers:
- Fibrinous Pericarditis: Heavy white-to-yellow fibrinous exudate encasing the heart sac.
- Fibrinous Perihepatitis: Thick yellow layer of fibrin covering the liver capsules.
- Fibrinous Airsacculitis: Clouding and yellow caseous exudate filling thoracic and abdominal air sacs (Usman et al., 2024; Lañada et al., 2022).
Multidrug Resistance (AMR) & Antimicrobial Stewardship
Global surveillance shows APEC isolates exhibit multidrug resistance (MDR) exceeding 50% against ampicillin, tetracyclines, and trimethoprim-sulfa (Nhung et al., 2017; Nechypurenko et al., 2024). Control requires sensitivity-guided treatment, hatchery sanitation to prevent yolk sac infection, and postbiotics/probiotics (Chaney et al., 2024; Muneeb et al., 2024).
Differential Diagnosis & Diagnostic Isolation
Laboratory Isolation: APEC E. coli isolates grow readily on MacConkey agar as pink lactose-fermenting colonies and on eosin methylene blue (EMB) agar with a characteristic metallic green sheen.
Differential Diagnosis: Fibrinous airsacculitis and pericarditis must be differentiated from Mycoplasma gallisepticum, Pasteurella multocida (Fowl Cholera), and Riemerella anatipestifer in waterfowl (Khairullah et al., 2024).
