Bacterial Pathogenesis & Transmission

Salmonella belongs to the family Enterobacteriaceae. It is classified into two major categories:

  • Host-Adapted Strains (Pullorum & Typhoid): Salmonella Pullorum causes Pullorum disease in young chicks. Salmonella Gallinarum causes Fowl Typhoid in adult birds, resulting in swollen mahogany-bronze livers and severe anemia. Both are reportable bacterial diseases.
  • Zoonotic Strains (Paratyphoid): Salmonella Enteritidis and Salmonella Typhimurium do not cause severe disease in mature chickens but colonize the intestinal tract and ovaries, contaminating egg shells and contents, which causes food poisoning in humans.

Biosecurity & Zoonotic Prevention Protocols

Eradicating Salmonella relies on zero-tolerance biosecurity: breed only from certified Pullorum-free hatcheries, test breeders via whole-blood agglutination tests, and cull carrier reactors.
