Riemerella anatipestifer: Infectious Serositis in Waterfowl & Poultry

Scientific Overview

Riemerella anatipestifer infection (Infectious Serositis / Duck Septicemia) is a major bacterial disease of ducks, geese, turkeys, and commercial broilers caused by Riemerella anatipestifer. It causes fibrinous pericarditis, perihepatitis, airsacculitis, meningitis, head tremors, and heavy mortality (5% to 75%) in young ducklings and poults.

Etiology & Serotypes (1 to 21)

Transmission occurs through respiratory aerosols, skin cuts on webbed feet, or contaminated pond water. Serotype 1, 2, and 5 cause the majority of global outbreaks.

Necropsy Pathology & Neurological Signs

Pathognomonic necropsy lesions in ducklings and poults:

  • Fibrinous Triad: Extensive butter-like yellow fibrinous pericarditis, perihepatitis, and airsacculitis encasing abdominal organs.
  • Fibrinous Meningitis: Thick exudate covering brain meninges, causing head tremors, ataxia, and paddling leg movements.
  • Caseous Salpingitis: Oviduct filled with solid caseous cores in young female waterfowl.

Antimicrobial Therapy & Autogenous Vaccines

Treatment requires water-soluble Ceftiofur, Enrofloxacin, or Sulfadimethoxine. Because cross-protection between serotypes is poor, commercial duck farms utilize autogenous inactivated bacterins containing local farm serotypes to protect breeder and duckling stocks.
