Scientific Overview
Riemerella anatipestifer infection (Infectious Serositis / Duck Septicemia) is a major bacterial disease of ducks, geese, turkeys, and commercial broilers caused by Riemerella anatipestifer. It causes fibrinous pericarditis, perihepatitis, airsacculitis, meningitis, head tremors, and heavy mortality (5% to 75%) in young ducklings and poults.
Etiology & Serotypes (1 to 21)
Riemerella anatipestifer is defined as a Gram-negative, non-motile, non-spore-forming rod bacterium of the family Flavobacteriaceae. At least 21 distinct serotypes are recognized.
Transmission occurs through respiratory aerosols, skin cuts on webbed feet, or contaminated pond water. Serotype 1, 2, and 5 cause the majority of global outbreaks.
Necropsy Pathology & Neurological Signs
Pathognomonic necropsy lesions in ducklings and poults:
- Fibrinous Triad: Extensive butter-like yellow fibrinous pericarditis, perihepatitis, and airsacculitis encasing abdominal organs.
- Fibrinous Meningitis: Thick exudate covering brain meninges, causing head tremors, ataxia, and paddling leg movements.
- Caseous Salpingitis: Oviduct filled with solid caseous cores in young female waterfowl.
Antimicrobial Therapy & Autogenous Vaccines
Treatment requires water-soluble Ceftiofur, Enrofloxacin, or Sulfadimethoxine. Because cross-protection between serotypes is poor, commercial duck farms utilize autogenous inactivated bacterins containing local farm serotypes to protect breeder and duckling stocks.
