Avian Leukosis Virus (ALV): Subgroups A-J, Tumors & Eradication
Scientific profile covering Retroviridae oncogenesis, Subgroup J myeloid leukosis, visceral lymphomas, and breeder eradication testing.
Scientific Overview
Avian Leukosis Virus (ALV) encompasses a family of avian retroviruses causing neoplastic tumor diseases (lymphoid leukosis, myeloid leukosis), severe immunosuppression, stunting, and egg production loss in chickens. Subgroup J (ALV-J) is particularly aggressive in broiler breeders and commercial meat stock.
Etiology & Retroviral Subgroups (A, B, C, D, J)
Avian Leukosis Virus (ALV) is defined as an enveloped single-stranded RNA retrovirus (family Retroviridae, genus Alpharetrovirus). Subgroups are classified by envelope glycoprotein viral neutralization antigens.
Transmission occurs vertically from dam to chick via egg albumen/yolk, or horizontally via saliva and droppings. Hens infected vertically remain congenitally viremic shedder birds for life.
Pathology & Differential Diagnosis: ALV vs Marek's Disease
Differentiating Avian Leukosis from Marek's Disease is a critical veterinary skill:
| Feature | Lymphoid Leukosis (ALV) | Marek's Disease (MDV) |
|---|---|---|
| Causative Agent | Retrovirus (RNA) | Alphaherpesvirus (DNA) |
| Age of Onset | >14 weeks (mature birds) | 3 to 24 weeks (younger) |
| Nerve Enlargement | Absent | Present (Sciatic nerve) |
| Bursa Tumors | Nodular tumor transformation | Atrophy / Diffuse involvement |
Breeder Eradication & Testing
There is no treatment or commercial vaccine for ALV. Control relies on primary breeder eradication programs using ELISA testing of meconium, vaginal swabs, and egg albumen (p27 antigen detection) to eliminate shedder hens from breeding pipelines.
