Leg Weakness Definition & Skeletal Pathology
Chicken leg weakness is defined as any structural, developmental, or infectious pathology affecting the long bones (femur, tibiotarsus, tarsometatarsus) or joints, resulting in gait abnormalities, lameness, and immobility.
Lame broilers spend less time moving to drinkers and feeders, leading to severe dehydration, elevated FCR, breast blisters, and culling loss.
Nutritional Causes: Rickets, Ca:P Imbalance & Vitamin D3
Nutritional leg disorders stem from mineral or vitamin deficiencies:

Infectious Causes: BCO & Viral Arthritis
Infectious bone disorders cause acute painful lameness:
- Bacterial Chondronecrosis with Osteomyelitis (BCO / Femoral Head Necrosis): Translocation of opportunistic bacteria (Staphylococcus aureus, Enterococcus cecorum) from the gut into micro-fractures of the growth plate, causing necrosis of the femoral head.
- Viral Arthritis (Avian Reovirus): Causes swelling of the digital flexor and metatarsal extensor tendon sheaths, leading to ruptured tendons.
