Heat Stress in Poultry: Symptoms, Panting & Management Guide

Heat stress is one of the most critical environmental challenges in commercial broiler and layer production. Lacking sweat glands, chickens rely almost entirely on panting (evaporative cooling) to dissipate heat. When ambient temperature and relative humidity exceed the bird's thermal comfort zone (20–24°C), severe physiological stress occurs, leading to dropped feed intake, elevated FCR, soft eggshells, and acute mortality.
Heat Stress Definition & Avian Thermoregulation
Heat stress in poultry is defined as a physiological state occurring when ambient heat load (temperature + humidity) exceeds the bird's heat dissipation capacity. Because birds have no sweat glands and are covered in insulating feathers, their core temperature (~41.5°C) rises rapidly when house temperatures exceed 30°C (86°F).
Chickens dissipate excess body heat through four physical mechanisms:
- Radiation & Convection: Heat transfer from unfeathered skin (comb, wattles, legs) to surrounding air. Operates effectively only when air temperature is well below body temperature (<28°C). High air velocity (2.5–3.0 m/s) in tunnel ventilation accelerates convective heat loss.
- Conduction: Heat loss through direct contact with cool litter or concrete floor.
- Evaporative Cooling (Panting / Gular Flutter): The primary heat loss mechanism above 30°C. Birds rapidly pump air over respiratory surfaces to evaporate water, consuming high metabolic energy.
Clinical Symptoms & Behavioral Signs
Recognizing early behavioral indicators of heat stress allows fast intervention before mortality spikes:
- Panting with beak wide open: Respiratory rate increases from 25 breaths/min up to 250 breaths/min.
- Wing spreading & posture: Birds hold wings away from body to expose apteria (unfeathered skin patches under wings) to air streams.
- Lethargy & prostration: Birds crouch close to moist litter or crowd near air inlets, avoiding physical activity.
- Drastic reduction in feed intake: Feed consumption drops 1.5% for every 1°C rise in temperature above 20°C, causing sharp drops in growth rate and egg weight.

Rapid hyperventilation (panting) causes hyper-excretion of carbon dioxide (CO2) from lungs, shifting blood gas chemistry:

Practical Management & Cooling Pad Sizing
Controlling heat stress requires engineered house ventilation and cooling systems:

- Evaporative Cooling Pads: Run water over cellulose cooling pads at the inlet end. High ambient heat vaporizes pad moisture, dropping incoming air temperature by 5–10°C.
- Electrolyte & Vitamin C Supplementation: Add Sodium Bicarbonate (1–2 kg/ton feed), Potassium Chloride, and Vitamin C (200 mg/L in drinking water) to restore blood electrolyte balance and lower body core temperature.
