Scientific Overview
Necrotic Enteritis (NE) is an acute, economically catastrophic bacterial enteritis of broiler chickens caused by Clostridium perfringens Type A harboring the netB toxin gene. Characterized by severe mucosal necrosis of the small intestine ('Turkish towel' lining), NE causes sudden flock mortality (up to 1% per day) and subclinical growth depression.
Etiology & The netB Toxin Gene
Necrotic Enteritis is defined as a gut mucosal necrosis caused by Clostridium perfringens Type A expressing the pore-forming netB (Necrotic Enteritis Toxin B-like) exotoxin (Mohammed et al., 2025; Bastamy et al., 2023).
Subclinical Coccidiosis (Eimeria acervulina/maxima) damages mucosal epithelium and induces mucus hyper-secretion, providing the primary nutrient substrate for rapid C. perfringens proliferation.
Gross Necropsy Pathology ('Turkish Towel' Intestine)
Pathognomonic intestinal lesions:
- Jejunal & Ileal Ballooning: Small intestine is friable, gas-distended, and filled with dark, foul-smelling fluid.
- Diphtheritic Pseudomembrane: Mucosal lining is covered by a brownish-yellow, velvety pseudomembrane resembling a 'Turkish towel'.
- Foul Odor: Distinctive putrid odor upon opening the abdominal cavity.
Non-Antibiotic Control & Phytogenic Additives
Due to antibiotic growth promoter (AGP) bans, NE control relies on non-drug interventions: adding probiotics (Bacillus subtilis), postbiotics, organic acids (butyrate), and phytogenic saponins to feed to reinforce gut integrity and block netB toxin binding (Çalık et al., 2024; Miska et al., 2023; Muneeb et al., 2024).
Differential Diagnosis & Diagnostic Methods
Differential Diagnosis: Necrotic Enteritis must be differentiated from Ulcerative Enteritis (Clostridium colinum), Eimeria maxima coccidiosis, and toxic enteritis caused by feed mycotoxins.
Laboratory Confirmation: Gram-stained mucosal impression smears reveal large, double-zone hemolytic, Gram-positive rod bacilli. PCR assay targeting the netB toxin gene confirms virulent C. perfringens isolates (Mohammed et al., 2025).
